How we got to this point - 40 days from boarding a one way flight to Melbourne

Last February my girlfriend Laci and I boarded a flight to Melbourne Australia for our very first vacation to the land down under.  Little did we know at the time just how much we were going to fall in love with the city of Melbourne.  Over the course of two short weeks we were able to experience the Laneway music festival, the Great Ocean Road, the Twelve Apostles, the Mornington Peninsula, and to cap it all off White Night.  Below are some of the photos from our trip almost a year ago.

Once we returned stateside, the only thing that was on our minds was "How can we go back as permanent residents".  So being the highly focused and motivated person I am, I started doing some research, a grotesque amount of research.  I quickly came to the realization that hey, this is totally possible, it's just going to take an insane amount of time and money.  I won't go into the gory details of the process but lets just say it involved 7 months of time between starting the process and getting our visas granted.  It also included, 3 English test (because I am fluent in math and not English as an engineer),  an accreditation of my degree, a nomination by the Victorian government, a doctors visit that included an AIDS test and a Tuberculosis test, as well as several thousand dollars from both of us.
